Solo female travel safety: 15 tips that really help

Updated 2026-10-25 · 7 minute read

Travelling solo is one of the best things you can do. You don't need to be fearless, just prepared. These tips come down to two ideas: blend in where you are, and keep a few trusted people back home in the loop.

Before you book

  1. Read recent reviews by women for neighbourhoods and places to stay, not just ratings.
  2. Book your first night and plan how you'll get there from the airport or station, so you arrive with a plan.
  3. Write down the local emergency number and your embassy's number. Save them in your phone and on paper.
  4. Share your itinerary with one or two people at home: flights, places to stay and rough plans.

On arrival and getting around

  1. Use official taxis or apps, and check the plate and driver before you get in. Share the trip with someone.
  2. Get a local SIM or eSIM so maps and messages work everywhere, not only on hotel Wi-Fi.
  3. Look like you know where you're going. Check the map before you leave, not on a street corner.
  4. Keep a small amount of cash and a card separate from your main wallet.

Where you stay

  1. Don't say your room number out loud at reception, and use the door lock or a small doorstop alarm.
  2. Pick places with 24-hour reception or a host who answers messages quickly.

Days and nights out

  1. Tell someone your plans for the day and set a check-in. If you don't check in, they know to call.
  2. Share your plans like a story: where you're going and who you're with, visible to your circle for a few hours.
  3. Have an exit line ready. "My friend is waiting for me" or a fake call gets you out of most uncomfortable chats.
  4. Watch your drink and keep to your own limits, especially the first nights in a new place.
  5. Trust your gut. Changing plans because something feels off is always the right call.
Your people, one press away: with a free safety circle, the people back home can see your SOS and live location when you need them, without tracking you the rest of the time.
