Taxi and rideshare safety tips for women

Updated 2026-10-25 · 4 minute read

Rideshares and taxis are usually the safest way home late at night. These habits make them even safer, and take seconds.

Before you get in

  • Wait inside until the app says the car has arrived.
  • Check three things: the plate, the car model and the driver's face. Ask "Who are you here for?" instead of saying your name.
  • Share the trip with a friend or your circle: car, plate and driver.

During the ride

  • Sit in the back, behind the passenger seat, so you can leave from either side.
  • Follow the route on your own map.
  • Keep your phone charged and in your hand.
  • Don't share personal details like where you work or if you live alone.

If something feels wrong

  • Ask to stop somewhere busy and get out. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
  • Call a friend and talk out loud: "I'm in the car, I'll be there in ten minutes."
  • Use your app's emergency button or call the emergency number.
  • Send an SOS to your circle with your live location.
In Shecurity: Ride check saves the car and driver and sends them to your circle before you get in, and Walk me home takes over for the last stretch to your door.
