Girls' night out safety: a checklist for you and your friends
A night out is better when everyone gets home happy. The best safety plan isn't a gadget: it's a group of friends who look out for each other. Here's a checklist you can share in the group chat before you go.
Before you go out
- Agree on a plan. Where you start, where you might end up, and how everyone gets home. Say it out loud so nobody has to guess later.
- Make a circle for the night. Put everyone who's going in one safety circle, so you can see each other's SOS and live location if something happens. In Shecurity, a circle takes ten seconds to make with an invite link.
- Charge your phone and bring a small power bank. A dead phone is the most common way plans fall apart.
- Save a meeting point in case you get separated, like the entrance or a nearby café.
- Know the emergency number for where you are: 112 in Europe, 911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK, 000 in Australia.
While you're out
- Arrive together, leave together. If someone wants to stay or leave early, make sure she has a way home and tells the group.
- Watch your drinks and each other's. Don't accept drinks you didn't see being made, and get a new one if you left yours.
- Use a code word. Agree on a word or emoji that means "come get me" or "I need an excuse to leave". A fake call works too.
- Check in now and then. A quick look around the room for your friends is the oldest safety system there is, and it works.
- Trust the feeling. If a person or place feels off to you or a friend, you don't need a reason to go.
Getting home
- Share the ride. Send the car, plate and driver to the circle before you get in.
- Walk in pairs or share your walk live so friends can follow along until you're inside.
- Say you're home. One "home safe" in the group, or tap "I've arrived", so nobody lies awake wondering.
Tip: make it a habit, not a big deal. When checking in is normal in your group, nobody feels awkward asking for help.
