How to choose the best safety app for women
There are many personal safety apps, and they're not all made the same way. Before you trust one with your location, here's what's worth checking.
1. Who can see you?
The best safety apps work with a private circle: people you invite yourself, like friends and family. Be careful with apps that show you on a public map or connect you with strangers nearby.
2. Does SOS share your live location?
A good SOS sends your live location, not just one pin, so your circle can follow if you move. It should be fast to trigger and hard to trigger by accident, like press and hold.
3. Does it help before something happens?
Most of safety is prevention. Look for walk me home (live location until you arrive), check-in timers (alerts only if you don't check in), fake call to leave a situation politely, and a loud siren.
4. Is it really free, and how does it make money?
Many apps are free to download but lock the important features behind a subscription. Others show ads or earn money from data. Ask: what does it cost in an emergency, and what happens to my location history?
5. Does it work for the people you love?
Your friends and family need to be able to join without paying and without a complicated setup. A text message fallback for people without the app is a plus.
6. Is it easy when you're stressed?
In a scary moment you won't read menus. One big button, clear words, and widgets or watch buttons make all the difference.
